ARGUS, WYVERN, and IS-BAO: Which Safety Rating Does Your Charter Operation Need?

Corporate flight departments and charter brokers increasingly require third-party safety audits before placing passengers on your aircraft. Without a recognized safety rating, you lose access to the highest-value charter segments.

Beyond market access, safety ratings demonstrably reduce insurance premiums. Up to one-third of IS-BAO registered operators report premium reductions. ARGUS and WYVERN ratings similarly influence underwriter risk assessments.

ARGUS provides three tiers. Gold uses database verification of FAA records — no on-site audit required. Gold Plus adds an on-site historical safety review. Platinum requires a comprehensive on-site operational audit.

ARGUS is the most widely recognized rating among U.S. brokers. The TripCheq system allows brokers to verify your rating status in real time. Annual renewal is required for all tiers.

WYVERN offers the Wingman standard, which is a deep operational audit covering safety management, flight operations, maintenance, ground handling, and security. It is generally considered the most thorough of the three programs.

WYVERN audits are conducted on-site by trained auditors and result in either approval or conditional findings requiring corrective action. Renewal is annual.

IS-BAO (International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations) is published by IBAC and uses a staged approach: Stage I requires an SMS framework and a conformance audit, Stage II requires 12 months of SMS operation, and Stage III requires a mature SMS with continuous improvement evidence.

IS-BAO is the most internationally recognized standard and aligns directly with ICAO SMS requirements. It is particularly valuable for operators conducting international charter.

If your primary market is U.S. domestic charter through brokers: start with ARGUS Gold or Gold Plus. It is the fastest to obtain and most widely checked by U.S. brokers.

If your clients are multinational corporations with strict safety policies: pursue WYVERN Wingman. Many corporate travel policies specifically require WYVERN certification.

If you fly internationally or want SMS alignment with the upcoming FAA mandate: pursue IS-BAO. It provides the most comprehensive safety framework and directly supports your Part 5 SMS implementation.
